PTA Wanted Section:
Website Maintenance for 2008-2009 School Year - After initial set-up, this job requires only a couple hours a week and can be done on your own time! Training provided! It involves keeping the site up to date by entering data into a MySql database. Please email webmaster@sunsetsockeyepta.org for more information.

PTA Meetings
The Sunset PTA Board meets each month on a Monday at 9:15 A.M. in the library. Meetings last about 90 minutes and are packed with information. ALL Sunset parents are VERY WELCOME to attend - so, join us if you can! Dr. Rasmussen visited the April PTA meeting to answer our questions and give insight into the Issaquah School District. PTA Goals

Mission: To continually advocate for the success of our children at Sunset Elementary by sponsoring, coordinating and promoting activities that enrich our fundamental curriculum and/or foster a sense of school community.

Achieve 100% membership for the sixth consecutive year to ensure that every child that attends Sunset has an adult representative.
Promote and support the educational needs of students with supplemental programs, i.e. Eager Reader, Passport Program, Benchmark Enrichment Learning (BEL), Reflections, Science-to-Go, Author Visits, DARE and Art Docents.
Encourage parent involvement through volunteerism in the classroom, at school-sponsored events (i.e. Vision/Hearing, & Picture Day) and at PTA events/programs. Provide training through Parent Education seminars and PTA meetings.
Strengthen Sunset and community relationships by hosting events ( i.e. Back-to-School BBQ, Spooky Spaghetti Night, Sock Hop, Talent Show, Bingo/Hodge Podge Night Teacher Appreciation Week, and providing volunteer and/or financial support (Issaquah Schools Foundation, Caring Through Sharing, Scholarships).
Ensure timely and effective communication between the PTA, staff and parents through the PTA website, KidMail, e-mail and the PTA Newsletter.
Maintain fiscal responsibility and provide financial stewardship for current PTA funds, while supporting on-going fundraising activities such as Walk-a-thon, membership drive, Ink Cartridge Recycling, Flower Sales, Book Fairs, Matthews Receipts and Boxtops and Sunset Spiritwear Sales.

Sunset PTA receives the Gold!

The annual Washington State PTA Convention took place last week and Sunset's PTA was honored with several awards including the 100% Membership Award. Only 28 schools in Washington received this prestigious award! Congratulations to all who helped us to achieve this milestone for the 5th year in a row!

Sunset's PTA works hard to follow the high standards of operation specified by the national organization. That is why it is very gratifying to have received the Standards of Excellence Award. For this award, qualifying PTAs are judged for practices and operations conducive with the most sound and responsible practices recommended. For excellence in financial management, officer training, goal setting, student programs, communication etc., this evaluation is a reflection of a commitment by a PTA's Board of Directors to operate at the highest level on behalf of its membership. This year, nine PTAs won at the bronze level, fourteen at the silver level and ten at the gold level from all around the state. Sunset's PTA was honored to achieve in the gold category!

The Honor Unit Award is judged on a comprehensive notebook containing detailed examples of our organization’s practices, work, organization and successes. Many thanks to Kim Putney who is diligent in keeping this notebook up-to-date throughout the year and submitting it to the state on behalf of Sunset's PTA. This year, 19 PTAs from across the state were named finalists in the Honor Unit Award category. Of those, 14 won at the bronze level, four at the silver level and one at the gold level. Sunset's PTA was honored to achieve in at the Bronze level!

Sunset's PTA was also recently recognized by the National PTA with a Unit Achievement Award.
