Think Big Grant

The Teachers and Parents are thinking big!

In September, the Board formed and charged the Think Big Sub-Committee to compile, research and make recommendations as to how to use the additional funds the PTA had set aside for a big project. Public notices were received by the PTA requested recommendations on how to spend the money. The Sub-Committee met and reviewed recommendations from parents, teachers and administration. They researched various items and some general factors were considered: initial cost, initial and continued overhead and maintenance costs, the number of students it benefited, and it's affect in the classroom.  The PTA was so excited to approve funds for some very special projects. Keep an eye on how Sunset Elementary will be changing and improving.
  • Study Club - The PTA will give $15,000 to fund a study club for three years.  There, kids can get teacher help before school on Monday and Thursday mornings!  Initially, it will be available to 3rd-5th graders.
  • Music Playground - The PTA will give $15,000 to provide a Symphony in the School Yard.
  • Climbing Wall - The PTA will give $9,000 to install an indoor rock wall to be attached to gym wall.
  • Sunset School Sign - In the amount of $4750, the PTA will be updating our signage in the front of the school to replace the banner signs that are currently tied to the building.
  • Digital Cameras - $2,000 for digital cameras (one for each grade level)
  • Money to ECE - $1,000 lump sum donation to the ECE program
  • Family Event at School - $2,000 set aside for a family event for the 2007/08 school year.

Update to the Music Playground

"Please thank the PTA again for granting the funds for the outdoor musical playground equipment. The 50% payment has been received by Freenotes, construction is already proceeding and I've been contacted regarding paint colors. I chose two tones of blue from their palette. Mr. Hamasaki has walked the grounds looking for a site and has settled on one or the other side of the asphalt path that runs between the two big toy areas. We are thinking a box surround with wood chips will need to be included to keep the area from becoming muddy. Soon we'll be asking folks to help pour concrete. . . . "
